The "Yacht-Master" 16628, first introduced in 1992, is nominally associated with the world of sailing and yachting, but the professional watch has no specific features to support sailing. In fact, it's just a Submariner with a better aesthetic and a better case material.
Rolex was also aware of this omission, and so, in 2007, they launched The Yacht Master II in 2007. It's a whole new generation. The gold 116688 and platinum 116689 are both professional regatta watches. Now a true professional yacht watch, it is equipped with a new 4160 movement, which is derived from the 4130 timing movement built into the Daytona. Rolex added additional features, making the Cal.4160 the first movement in the world to be equipped with a programmable countdown feature, with mechanical memory of 1 to 10 minutes.
In 2013, Rolex introduced the 116680 stainless steel and upgraded the movement in the form of the Cal.4161. It's not clear how the movement has changed relative to the 4160, but the basic data and appearance seem to be the same.
2017 Basel International Watch and Jewelry Show, Yacht-Master II revised again. The update is mainly an aesthetic change to the dial, but the Cal.4161 movement is now certified by the Rolex Superlative Chronometer. The 2017 edition of the stainless steel, gold, platinum and gold watches are upgraded to 116680-0002 from 116680-0001.
